ESPR Eco-design for sustainable products in the EU
Legal overview
“ Eu Eco-design Regulation for Sustainable Products” Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is a proposal formally adopted in March 2022, which aims to reduce the negative environmental impact of products on the European market throughout their life cycle. To increase the influence of the European market on global environmental protection and sustainable products, and to achieve a fully sustainable circular economy by 2030.
The new ESPR regulation will be based on the old Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC, in terms of the scope of products covered by the directive and related product requirements. In terms of product scope, the ESPR will be expanded from the original 15 products covered by the Directive to more than 30 product categories, covering almost all products on the market (including the textile industry).
Product scope
After a thorough assessment of products in accordance with the criteria, the European Commission will regularly update the list of products that need to meet the requirements of the EU's climate, environmental and energy efficiency objectives. The European Commission gives priority to high-impact products, mainly including: textiles (especially footwear); Furniture (including mattresses); Iron and steel; Aluminum; Tires; Paint; Lubricants and chemicals; Energy-related products; ICT products and other electronic products.
Product requirements
ESPR puts forward the following requirements for products: product durability, reusability, upgradability and repairability; Recycled material content; Energy and resource efficiency; The content of recyclable materials; Product carbon footprint and environmental footprint; Product information disclosure, in particular the Digital Product Passport.
