Science Based Targets initiative(SBTi)
Project Introduction

The Science Carbon Target Initiative (SBTi) was established in 2015 and is a global initiative jointly initiated by the Center for Global Environmental Information (CDP), the United Nations Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to help businesses set ambitious emission reduction targets based on the latest climate science. It is part of the commitment of the Global Business Climate Alliance (We Mean Business Coalition). This initiative defines scientific carbon goals and promotes best practices for setting scientific carbon goals, providing resources and guidance to reduce application barriers, and independently evaluating and reviewing corporate goals.

Enterprises need to set greenhouse gas emission reduction targets based on the emission reduction path proposed in the Paris Agreement to control global temperature rise at 1.5 degrees Celsius or far below 2 degrees Celsius, in order to become the Scientific Carbon Target (SBT). Since its launch in 2015, SBTi has quickly gained global recognition and is becoming an international business practice, with over 3300 companies joining so far.

Applicable objects

一、Advocate to promote corporate climate action and encourage companies in all fields to demonstrate their leadership by setting scientifically based emission reduction targets;

二、Encourage high emission industry enterprises to join and ensure low-carbon transformation of the economy;

三、The participants of the initiative do not include cities, local governments, government agencies, educational institutions, or other types of non-profit organizations, but encourage institutions to refer to scientific goal setting methodologies when setting greenhouse gas emission reduction targets。
Why participate?
According to official information from SBTi, as of the end of February 2023, approximately 4677 institutions worldwide have signed the Scientific Carbon Target Initiative, committing to setting scientific carbon targets. Among them, 291 institutions in China have signed commitment letters, and the carbon targets of 104 enterprises have been approved, such as JD Logistics and Lenovo.

The establishment of scientific carbon goals can not only prevent the adverse effects of climate change, but also effectively enhance the competitive advantage of enterprises in the process of transitioning to a low-carbon economy。

◆ Scientific carbon goals can guide enterprises to plan carbon reduction routes more reasonably and achieve sustainable and scientific emission reduction work;
◆ The scientific carbon goals contain a long-term vision, which helps drive enterprise innovation, birth new technologies, and new financing options;
◆ Scientific carbon goals help reduce corporate risks, increase investor confidence and credibility, and enhance corporate competitiveness;
◆ Scientific carbon goals help companies respond to policy regulation and supply chain control, showcasing their commitment to sustainable development to the outside world。
